the answers...

What type of store is Macro Wholefoods?

Macro Wholefoods Market is an organic and wholefoods supermarket and cafe.

What will I find in a Macro store?

Usually this can depend on the size of the store opening, however, our ideal model includes the following departments:
  • Organic and biodynamic produce
  • A wide choice of dietary specific products, such as 'free from' foods (gluten, wheat, dairy, sugar); vegan and kosher
  • A large range of unrefined wholefoods, including bulk nuts, seeds, grains and beans
  • An organic and wholefoods cafe and deli
  • Environmentally-friendly and healthy household products, toiletries and body care products
  • A naturopathy clinic and dispensary

Are all products in the store organic?

Products that are certified organic and biodynamic are given our first preference. Where an organic or biodynamic product is unavailable we will source the cleanest, highest quality and least refined product we can find.

In addition, we stock a range of dietary specific products to cater for our diverse customer base, such as 'free from' foods, kosher, vegan, artisan and Australian made. These may or may not be certified organic or biodynamic.

What type of food and beverage does the cafe serve?

The Macro cafe provides a range of foods to suit health conscious and environmentally aware customers. Our menu focuses on foods that are minimally processed, ethically produced and of the highest quality standard. In particular, we strive to use organic and biodynamic product when and whenever possible. However, in order to offer a diverse menu, if organic is not available we will only use clean conventional product free of artificial chemicals, additives and colourings.

We also supply a range of 'free-from' foods - gluten, wheat, dairy, sugar - to cater for customers with special dietary requirements.

Are all food and beverages in the cafe organic?

Our preference is to use organic and biodynamic product when and where available. We always use 100% certified coffee, milk, bread, eggs and chicken. However, where an organic or biodynamic product is unavailable we will source the cleanest, highest quality and least refined product we can find.

Why is organic more expensive?

Our view is that organic is the real price of food. Organic food prices represent the true cost of growing nutritious, high quality produce. Some of these costs include: more labour intensive practices, expensive natural fertilisers, soil regeneration processes, organic grain for livestock, lower yields, certification fees and higher transportation costs due to smaller scale distribution.

The conventional food industry has brought down prices through mass agricultural production. Although cheaper at the 'price point', these prices do not take into account the hidden costs borne by us each year. These include government funded activities such as cleaning up water pollution, pesticide testing and regulation, desalination and preventing soil erosion. Nor does it reflect our health costs and medical bills later in life.

As the industry grows, the price differential between organic and conventional produce will close marginally as economies of scale are brought to market.

Why can't I get the product I want all the time? Why isn't there consistency in supply?

Contrary to popular opinion, we aren't meant to get strawberries in winter or fresh apples all year round. There will be periods where the freshest, highest quality produce is not available due to seasonality restrictions. The same principle applies to our dairy products, which may mean more yoghurt in summer and less in winter due to lower production levels in the cooler months.

The good news is that when your product is in stock, you are guaranteed of freshness and quality.

Why does Macro still stock some non-organic produce?

Our number one priority is to stock organic and biodynamic produce. However, sometimes due to seasonal restrictions or lack of supply we may stock non-organic produce. This produce will always be clearly labelled as such, and be of the highest quality available.

Why should I shop at Macro over another organic retailer?

At Macro you get a one-stop shop. Similar to shopping in a supermarket, you can get all your household goods in one place, from fresh produce to groceries, and eco-friendly products from cleaning goods to organic cotton carry bags and rechargeable batteries.

However, unlike other stores, you can trust that we are 100% committed to wholefoods and sustainability - and always have been.
